TREATMENT

Getting treatment is a brave, tough thing to do. But the good news is that treatment services have improved.

The treatment services in Blanchardstown are getting better all the time and over 200 people from this area are currently getting treatment with drug-related problems.

At the GBRD, we feel that more can be done in areas like 'rehabilitation' and 're-integration'. We also support the Blanchardstown Local Drugs Task Force in calling for a Central Drug Treatment Facility to be set-up in the grounds of the James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown. We think that this would lead to a more flexible treatment service, for more people.

ROUTES THROUGH TREATMENT

Everyone's journey through treatment is different. The ideal treatment service, discussed in the "Towards a Comprehensive Drug Treatment Service in Blanchardstown" report, is outlined below.

This report was prepared on behalf of the Blanchardstown Local Drugs Task Force in 2004 and the GBRD fully supports the provision of this service in Blanchardstown.

First Contact (include needle exchanges)
This is where you meet an outreach worker or your GP, for example. They give you advice, information and can refer you for an assessment.

Assessment
This is where your 'care plan' is drawn up, which sets out the essential steps in your care and treatment.

A dedicated 'key worker' will work with you to help you achieve this plan.

This key worker will come from a 'lead agency', which is the organisation that takes overall responsibility for maintaining and reviewing your care plan.

Medical Treatment
Depending on your circumstances, you may need some medical treatment as an in-patient or as an out-patient, especially when you're trying to detox.

Non-Medical Treatment
Non-medical treatments might also be part of your care-plan. These can include counselling, family support, day programmes and complementary therapies like acupuncture and massage.

Rehabilitation & Integration
This stage might involve counselling, training and ongoing support, to help you stay drug-free.

If you'd like to talk to someone about the options that are open to you, why not get in touch with you local Community Drug Team, GP or Outreach Worker? They're there to help. For their contact details, please telephone us at the GBRD on 01 826 2364 or e-mail us at info@gbrd.ie.
