Working in collaboration with the Blanchardstown Drug Education Resource Centre and The Education Service (HSE Northern Area), the GBRD are piloting a new training programme with a difference, which helps community groups explore various drug-related issues in their area.
This training programme is unique because the participants help to design the course to meet their own information needs. Therefore, every Blanchardstown Drug Awareness Training Programme will be slightly different, while still containing accurate and up to date information, because it will be tailored to the participants' requirements.
In the future, this training programme will be run over 10 weekly sessions, where the participants pick and choose the 10 subjects that they feel are most useful to them, from a list of 12.
Here's an example of a training programme, delivered recently in the Dublin 15 area:
This training programme began in February 2005 with participants from two women's groups in the Blakestown area of Dublin 15.
Run over 7 weekly sessions, this programme encouraged participants to develop an interest in community drug related issues and afterwards, some participants decided to do further study in this area.
Here's an overview of their training programme, as designed by the participants and contributors:
Session 1: Introduction / Welcome / Expectations of Course
"Examining Attitudes to Drugs"
Session 2: Types of Drugs - Methods of Use
Session 3: Stages of Drug Use and Theories of Addiction
Session 4: History of Drug Use in Dublin
Session 5: Treatment, Rehabilitation, and Health Issues
Session 6: Drug Use Prevention - Signs and Symptoms.
Session 7: Local Drug Strategy - Evaluation and Closure
